2015 Core Set Review: White top 5

The Deck Meester’s calls regarding the top cards…

  1. 1.   Ajani Steadfast

Ajani needs no introduction to his candidacy. He is similar to Goldmane, who saw a lot of play back when he was legal. Once again he will, in my opinion, become white’s new staple. I do think though, that control decks will struggle to benefit from his loyalty. I foresee a potential shift towards Naya in monsters either pre or post rotation.

  1. 2.   Hushwing Gryff

This little bird, despite being in the worst colour for limited, as most of the sets activated ability cards lie in white and black, might be a good first pick as UW flyers, with this and quickling, could be rather fast and stable. More broadly speaking, Hushwing will be the new shake up card for modern.

  1. 3.   Devouring Light

Devouring Light is really strong, becoming a staple for control and all white. If it does not immediately tickle your appeal, think of the strongest card in the block. Elspeth sun’s champions and Brimaz will make Devouring Light very playable. For limited it’s going to be good, but modern will be unchanged.

  1. 4.   Spirit Bonds

Spirit Bonds is really hard to place. A casual bomb, especially in E.D.H. however I’m not sure if this card will see modern play and I doubt it will see legacy play. Kahns of Tarkir, and its themes will be the decider on how well Spirit Bonds does in post-rotation standard.

  1. 5.   Ephemeral Shields

A slick fit that really compliments the micro synergies in Theros. It works well with quick flood decks and is awesome with Brimaz. Don’t forget that it procs heroic. This will be huge in standard.

HONORABLE MENTIONS:

  1. Preeminent Captain
  2. Resolute Archangel
  3. Raise the Alarm
